👁 THE EARTH AND THE MOON
is a pendant necklace by Japanese artist Akiko Kurihara. It represents the ratio of the size between the earth (11mm, silver) and its orbiting moon (3mm, gold). When the necklace chain is stretched out the celestial bodies are also placed the proper distance from one another, given their miniature size.
I really love the idea of wearable maps that hold a little secret you can reveal to others. This necklace is elegantly executed: the black chain represents the emptiness of space, the invisibility of gravity's tether, and passes neatly through Earth's poles. The necklace is sold. Original piece. Artist's Site.
A parlor trick in my home concerning the ratios of size and distance between celestial bodies begins with a 12" globe. I find that visitors underestimate how far the moon is and overestimate how far the sun is. I think more familiar little models like this necklace could help us grapple with the vastness of space. Thanks to Amelia Toelke for brining this necklace to my attention.
