Inspiration from Info We Trust #025
Tapestry maps, couture cartography, and a spring Euro trip.
🧵 SHELDON TAPESTRY MAPS
Four tapestry maps were commissioned in the late 1580s by Ralph Sheldon. Each 20 ft wide tapestry depicted a county based on surveys by Christopher Saxton. They display information on rivers, towns, and geographical features. Here is what one of the surviving maps looks like:
And here is how beautiful its details are:
Three maps survive. One of the three is complete. Learn lots more about the Sheldon Tapestry Maps and their conservation: Wikipedia | Bodleian Library Conservation | Warwickshire Complete Map
🧵 COUTURE CARTOGRAPHERS
Eleven "couture cartographers" and their inspiring work are featured in a new essay published this week on Info We Trust. Their textile maps are made from high-quality fabrics and thread sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.
Each map is rich with their maker's imagination and conveys an enormous dedication of craft. Shown are only a few examples of their amazing work, please see the essay to meet the couture cartographers who inspire me with wonder and joy.
💂♀️ EURO TRIP
I will visit England at the end of March (London and Oxford) before heading to Utrecht to speak at the S-H-O-W conference, April 2 & 3.
I am seeking input for ways to boost this trip through interesting recommendations and introductions, including: hosting me in London, speaking engagements, workshops, and (very short) consulting services. Thanks for all your advice.
Onward! -RJ
