Outlier
The first conference hosted by the Data Visualization Society (DVS website) is mere hours away! It promises to provide inspirational talks, the ability to meet and connect with others, and the opportunity for all attendees to have a voice.
Thursday evening I will deliver a talk on the diagrams associated with Florence Nightingale. It is the product of years of research—expect to be wowed with what we learned (and saw) digging deep into an archive that includes dozens of charts and 38,000 pages of letters.
You can still get a ticket across an accessible range of price points to Outlier's three days of content. I'm excited to see talks from some of my heroes and many new faces.
This week's inspiration: Cerîde-i Adliye
Cerîde-i Adliye (Journal of Justice) was published out of Istanbul from about 1924–27. The chart shown below is from the cover of issue 56. It depicts the numbers of convicts held in Turkish prisons as of June 1926, organized according to the sentence length and type. Prisoners trapped in the spider web of incarceration still rings true, almost 100 years later.
The prisoner web is one of many fantastic Cerîde-i Adliye data graphics from the collection of visual cultural history researcher Ömer Durmaz (Twitter):
I am still just beginning to learn about these Turkish graphics. From the few examples displayed we can appreciate their freedom and creativity, expertly paired with mathematical precision. I find them totally spectacular, firmly rooted yet also unlike anything else in the data visualization catalog.
Thanks goes to Deniz Cem Önduygu (Twitter) for introducing me to Cerîde-i Adliye. He contributed to a collection of animated rendition of these graphics for an exhibit titled Speak to the Eyes (website).
VISIONARY PRESS
The best part of the holidays was shipping information graphics all over the world. To no surprise, the Swedish 3D color globe was everyone's favorite—it also doubles as a tree ornament! We have globes and packaged California was and Apollo 11 information graphics back in stock to inform and inspire.
I look forward to chatting with many of you at Outlier, and working together to make 2021 an inspiring year.
Onward! -RJ
