weekly viz to inspire you too
Today I launched a new data story about the Apollo 11 moonwalk: NEIL AND BUZZ GO FOR A WALK. I think you are going to love it. The image above is a screenshot from the piece, which I hope you see on a big screen (not your phone) for a big experience. See it now: LINK
💗 APOLLO 11 MOONWALK HEART-RATES
This week's piece of inspiring viz (below) came to my attention while researching the new data story. The Apollo 11 Mission Report includes the heart-rates of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during their moonwalk. Originally in two separate charts, see them layered and colored by me. Notice Buzz’s relative coolness (in blue) and Neil’s elevation (in commander red) near the end of the walk. The large spike in Neil’s heart-rate (which begins near 111:10) is his unscheduled sprint to-and-from the Little West Crater.
The Mission Report also includes Armstrong's heart-rate during lunar landing and ascent. The charts start on page 266 (section 12-13) in the PDF linked above.
👩🚀 NEW DATA STORY!
BUZZ AND NEIL was motivated by a realization: I had no idea what happened on the Apollo 11 moonwalk beyond Neil’s ONE SMALL STEP and that iconic flag photo. How many moonwalks were there? Just one. How long were they out there? About two hours. How far did they explore? An area about as big as a baseball diamond. What exactly did they do? Who knew that they spent the night on the Moon!?
After you see the new data story, do not miss the behind-the-scenes tour through its accompanying design essay. It reveals how I illustrated, designed, coded, and edited it all together.
