👁 AMERICAN DESERT
is one of twelve outstanding cutaway diagrams in Richard Orr's Nature Cross-Sections (1995). Each of his illustrations expertly compress time and space to give a singular view of a biome. The weight of his cross-sections makes it hard to believe that this is not an image of something that is actually three-dimensional. I love how the regular right angles of the cuts contrast with the natural forms of the flora and fauna. Do not miss the change in scale from left-to-right and the many predator-prey interactions. This is not even my favorite image from the book. It is merely the easiest example to show you here. You cannot find most of the other diagrams online (I've tried)—I strongly recommend a copy for your library. Amazon used
🛠 INFO WE TRUST
My essay titled "Tear Up Your Baseline" was just published online by the Data Visualization Society. It concerns a technique discovered in a 1939 textbook that I believe deserves revival. Wonderfully nerdy, I think you will enjoy: Link.
