Welcome to Chartography.net — insights and delights from the world of data storytelling.
I appreciate all your heartfelt emails in response to my election essay.
If you liked that, read
’s “Beauty as resistance”—which includes a healthy dose of Camus, and this zinger:When we design a good visualization we aren’t just conveying our best understanding of a truth; by sharing our contemplation of that truth, we’re also making ourselves and our readers freer.
First designs
The first three MAPS FOR KIDS posters are cooking. We have one geographic map, one statistical chart, and one pictorial diagram.
Each is in a different phase of design. Each one still scares me (read: thorny issues to solve) in a unique way.
My goal is to bring these three to the finish line together in the next ten days or so. Working them as a suite lets them learn from each other and hopefully hang together as a coherent whole. Then, we expand to the next three posters.
Today we will look at each design, discuss their strengths and outstanding risks.
But first, I’m spilling my guts—getting personal and showing my secrets. It is too sensitive to share completely in public, so the rest of this edition is for paying subscribers.
